Eco-Friendly Screen Printing

Screen printing is an art that starts off with separating an image into colors and burning each color onto a screen. After a screen is burned, we wash and dry each screen to prepare for printing. After printing, each screen must be cleaned again to wash off the excess inks. In a busy print shop, ink is disposed of everyday when washing the screens. There are several different types of inks used in screen printing, but plastisol and discharge will be the main options for you to choose from. Both inks have its advantages depending on what type of look and feel you’d like.

At Mindzai, we use water-based Matsui Inks  which are eco-friendly. Discharge ink is a water-based ink that dyes into the material and is 100% biodegradable. This type of ink is widely used for a "vintage" feel and soaks into the garment with no possibility of peeling or cracking. This means your print will last as long as your garment does. The Matsui Inks help provide our clients with a breathable garment and a vibrant print that feels soft to the touch.

Plastisol is a non-biodegradable ink and PVC -based. This ink prints on top of the fabric for an ultra bold look. When printed on, it forms a layer on the garment which feels thick to the touch. This is great if you want colors that truly pop. Plastisol is versatile and can be used on a wide range of fabrics. There are more environmentally friendly plastisol inks, but using water-based Matsui inks can help lessen our carbon footprint without compromising a bold print.
